The wine bar and French restaurant Bar Etoile is a collaborative creation that showcases the talents of Jill Bernheimer, known for her popular natural wine shop Domaine LA, along with chef Travis Hayden and Julian Kurland. The design of the space was undertaken by Lovers Unite, a design and architecture studio helmed by Karen Spector and Alan Koch. Their approach to the interior reflects a unique fusion of French New Wave aesthetics and the vibrant spirit of Los Angeles, the city where the establishment is located. This blend of contrasting elements—such as warmth and coolness in tones, as well as differences in temporal styles—results in an French interior design that feels both comfortingly familiar and refreshingly innovative.

When considering the layout of Bar Etoile, it can be divided into three distinct sections: the central bar area and the two adjoining halves on either side. Although these side areas share some similarities, they are not mirror images of one another. On one side of the Melrose Hill venue, the bistro-inspired section features dark brown wooden paneling that beautifully contrasts with rounded blue banquettes. The design team at Lovers Unite has continued this wooden paneling around the back of the space, leading toward the wine coolers, which are framed in a matching blue hue. The seating arrangements facing outward, combined with the moody lighting, create a chic atmosphere that feels effortlessly stylish, reminiscent of a fictional eatery from a Jean-Luc Godard film.
In contrast, the other half of the restaurant presents a different tonal scheme. Here, the walls are painted white, and linear brown banquettes are paired with deep blue chairs, creating a striking visual balance. This side of the establishment is adorned with a curated gallery of artwork, including unique handmade ceramic pieces featuring trompe l’oeil wine labels crafted by the talented ceramicist Anthony Dominici. This artistic touch adds an additional layer of sophistication and creativity to the environment.

The overall aesthetic is further enhanced by the curving bar counter that serves as the focal point of the space. This all-zinc bar epitomizes the warm and cool duality present throughout the restaurant, situated beneath a rounded soffit that boasts a glossy blue lacquer finish on its underside while maintaining a wooden exterior. This design choice effectively bridges the two contrasting halves of the restaurant, introducing a sleek and modern color and material element that invites a sense of playful elegance.
Moreover, Lovers Unite played a crucial role in developing the branding for Bar Etoile. They designed a custom glass mosaic floor, created a minimalistic yet straightforward menu, and incorporated neon signage alongside a distinctive brand mark. These thoughtful details contribute to a fully cohesive French interior design that embodies a mood that is both atmospheric and timeless, making Bar Etoile a standout destination for those seeking a unique dining experience in Los Angeles.
